- OVERVIEW
Every pre-owned e-bike from eBike Exchanges South Africa comes with a 60-day warranty from date of delivery / collection.
We are a pre-owned specialist. Every bike is fully serviced, safety checked, and test ridden in our Cape Town workshop before sale. Our warranty is in addition to your rights under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008.
Warranty is valid for the original purchaser only and is non-transferable.
All prices in ZAR. Warranty valid within South Africa only.
- WARRANTY PERIOD
- 60 days from delivery date (courier) or collection date (workshop)
- Starts on the day you receive the bike, not order date
- Proof of purchase required (order number / invoice)
Extended warranty: Not currently offered. We are working on optional 6-month motor/battery cover – contact us if interested.
- WHAT IS COVERED
If a defect arises from workmanship or component failure under normal use within 60 days, we cover:
Motor & Drive Unit:
- Sudden motor failure, no assist, error codes from motor, excessive noise due to internal failure
Battery:
- Sudden failure, not charging, not powering on, BMS failure
- Note: Gradual range loss is NOT covered – see Section 6 Battery Health
Electrical:
- Controller failure, display failure, torque sensor / cadence sensor failure, wiring loom defects
Frame:
- Structural frame crack not caused by crash, misuse, or overloading
Safety Check Items (at time of sale):
- We guarantee bike was safe and functional at dispatch – brakes, gears, steering, wheels true
If fault is confirmed as covered, we will at our option:
- Supply replacement part free, or
- Repair at our workshop free, or
- If repair not possible, offer replacement bike of similar spec or refund (per Returns Policy)
- WHAT IS NOT COVERED
Warranty does NOT cover:
- Wear and tear: tyres, inner tubes, punctures, brake pads, brake discs/rotors, chains, cassettes, chainrings, cables, outer cables, grips, saddle wear
- Consumables: brake fluid, bearing service after purchase
- Damage from misuse: wheelies, stunts, jumps, overloading beyond manufacturer rating, riding with loose axles
- Crash, drop, or impact damage – including bent derailleur hangers
- Water damage from pressure washing, jet washing, submersion, or riding through deep water
- Corrosion from storage in wet / coastal exposed conditions without care
- Unauthorized modifications: tuning chips, derestricting, non-standard battery, motor firmware changes, third-party motor repairs
- Repairs or diagnosis by third parties without our prior written approval
- Theft, loss, or vandalism
- Cosmetic deterioration: paint chips, decals, rust on bolts, fading
- Flat battery from leaving bike uncharged for extended period
- Software updates from manufacturer that change behaviour but are not faults
- HOW TO MAKE A WARRANTY CLAIM
- STOP riding if you suspect a serious fault (motor, battery, frame, brakes)
- Go to https://ebikeexchanges.co.za/contact/
- Select Subject: Warranty Claim
- Include:
- Order number and date of purchase
- Your name and phone number
- Brief description of fault
- Photos and short video (motor noise, display error, etc.)
- Odometer reading and battery charge level
- We respond within 1-2 business days
Do NOT attempt to open motor, battery, or controller before contacting us – this may void warranty.
For Cape Town customers: We may book you into workshop.
For nationwide customers: We may:
- Send replacement part with fitting instructions (simple parts)
- Arrange collection of bike/part to workshop at our cost for valid claims
- Request diagnostic data from display
You must keep original packaging for 14 days to assist with any return for warranty.
- BATTERY HEALTH – IMPORTANT FOR PRE-OWNED E-BIKES
Pre-owned batteries are used items with natural degradation.
- Unless stated otherwise on listing, batteries are tested at 80%+ of original capacity (Wh)
- If listing states specific %, e.g., 87% or 420Wh / 500Wh, that is our tested health at time of sale
- Range depends on rider weight, terrain, wind, tyre pressure, assist level, temperature, stop-start. Range is NOT warrantied as a fixed distance
- Gradual loss of range over time is normal lithium-ion behaviour, not a fault
- Battery warranty covers sudden failure (not charging, not turning on, BMS error, cell group failure), not gradual reduction
Battery care to keep warranty valid:
- Charge with supplied correct charger only
- Do not leave flat for >2 weeks
- Store between 20-80% if not used for long period
- Do not pressure wash battery
- Charge at room temperature, not in direct sun
If battery health is critical to you, request a diagnostic report before purchase – we can provide Bosch / Shimano / Brose / Yamaha diagnostic where applicable.
- WORKSHOP & COURIER FOR WARRANTY
- For valid warranty claims, we cover reasonable courier costs for bike or parts to/from our workshop within SA
- For invalid claims (wear and tear, crash damage, water damage), courier costs are at your cost
- If bike is returned for warranty and no fault found, or fault due to misuse, we may charge diagnostic fee of R450 and return courier cost
- Turnaround: We aim for 5-10 business days in workshop after receipt, excluding parts lead time
For simple fixes (puncture, brake adjustment, gear indexing), we will guide you via video call – these are not warranty faults but normal ownership.
- PRE-OWNED NATURE & LIMITATIONS
- Bikes are pre-owned, may have minor cosmetic marks not shown in photos due to lighting
- Some manufacturer warranty may have expired – our 60-day warranty is from us, not manufacturer
- We are not authorized dealer for all brands, but we service to high standard
- If manufacturer has active warranty remaining, we will assist you to claim with them where possible, but our 60-day remains primary
- Mileage / odometer may be reset after service or may reflect previous owner use – we state where known
- TRANSFER & COMMERCIAL USE
- Warranty is for original purchaser only, non-transferable if you sell bike
- Commercial use (rental, delivery, courier) voids warranty unless agreed in writing at time of sale
- Hire / rental fleet bikes marked as ex-fleet may have reduced 30-day warranty – will be stated in listing
- YOUR RIGHTS UNDER LAW
Under CPA Section 55, 56 and 57, you have the right to goods that are reasonably suitable, in good working order, and free from material defects.
If goods fail to meet these within 6 months, Section 56 gives you right to return for repair, replacement, or refund. Our 60-day warranty is our service promise to handle issues quickly, but does not limit your 6-month implied warranty under CPA. For CPA claims after 60 days up to 6 months, we will still assess per CPA – reasonable wear and tear and misuse exclusions still apply.
